Sidestreet Arts is delighted to feature a one-man show with Gregory Hergert. An extremely gifted and dedicated painter, Gregory is a local artist, living and working in SE Portland. He is also one of the founders of Brassworks Gallery located in SE Portland. Hergert has invented a form of “Urban Surrealism Art Movement” which captures the grittiness of the city with a unique sense of humor. In his form of Urban Surrealism, he is both a master of light and shadow and realism, making him a formidable painter. He has also had a huge impact on the art community, and has influenced many young painters in the Portland area.

“A city bus, a car horn, a drip of sweat as a rat scurries across the floor, hunched over the painting, the city, the imagination is Urban Surrealism.”

November's Featured Artist :

Beth Kerschen

As an everyday explorer, I find inspiration in the familiar yet constantly evolving landscapes of urban life. My urge to walk, observe, and listen has always been central to my artistic process, grounding me in the moment and expanding my perspective. Even when I have a destination in mind, I intentionally take new routes, immersing myself in the details—buildings, shops, signs, graffiti, and the vibrancy of city life. Each element speaks to our human need to communicate, connect, and create.

A sense of nostalgia stirs in me when I encounter unique old buildings, hand-painted signs, funky art cars, or thoughtfully designed gardens. Walking provides grounding and makes me feel at home, if only for a moment. Taking photos records these findings, then turning them into art documents and mirrors my journey.

In my original digital photomontage artwork, I would layer and obsessively include every nuance, capturing a place’s personality in intricate detail. I enjoyed it, but this drive for perfection eventually led to burnout. During my recovery, I rediscovered the importance of spontaneity, and the joy of wandering became my creative guide. I returned to printmaking, allowing for freedom with color, ink, and collage, and embracing the intuitive process—imperfect, synchronistic, exploratory, and true to the spirit of searching and surrendering.
